Exercising during and after pregnancy

by on July 19, 2010

Paula Radcliffe recently ran in a charity 10km run for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, at 7 months pregnant.

While the large majority of women see becoming pregnant as the perfect excuse for not continuing to exercise, those who wish to exercise whilst pregnant have shown that it is possible to do so sensibly without any ill effects to either mother or child.
Indeed, exercising up to a point whilst pregnant can be beneficial to both as mum-to-be will feel generally better about her body, curbing unnecessary weight gain.  Labour is often better managed when general fitness is good; ‘labour’ is called so for a reason, it’s the hardest of all workouts!

www.running4women.com has a sensible, easy to follow, start-up exercise programme for pregnant women and lists the following important do’s and dont’s of exercising when pregnant:

Do:

  1. Exercise with a friend if possible – this will dispel any boredom and help if you get into any difficulties.
  2. Consult your doctor or midwife before undertaking any exercise regime
  3. Make sure that you drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
  4. Pay attention to any discomfort whilst exercising and stop immediately.
  5. Make your exercise fun. Look at it as quality time for yourself and not a chore to get through –enjoy yourself!
  6. Pelvic floor exercises

Don’t:

  1. Ignore fatigue. Rest if you feel tired – listen to your body!
  2. Continue if you are in pain, especially in the pelvic and abdominal region.
  3. Be rigid with your programme. Adapt & change it according to how you feel.
  4. Overheat.

For post-pregnancy fitness, we love Time2Train Mums and Baby Buggy Club based in Chester, a fun outdoors exercise class specifically aimed to post natal fitness, where the only equipment you need to bring is your new baby in a pushchair!

If you need some exercise clothes for your maternity workout, try the super short Noppies Maternity Shorts or the Jersey Maternity Trousers.  Both are ideal for light exercise, or just being comfy at home.
